Artist Statement:
Embrace the Protector represents a New Zealand Taniwha. A mythical sea creature that protects rivers and waterways. Water is crucial for our survival and, therefore, needs protection. This creature remains a testament to people in the natural world, an enduring connection between humanity and the natural world. This artwork connects magical realism with the natural world.
Fiber artist Jennifer Angelo began her journey in wool felting when she lived in New Zealand for five years.
Today, the artist uses different types of wool, changing one element at a time to discover unique undulations of textures, loops, swirls or bumps. Influenced by thousands of years of felting, she continues the tradition in a modern context, using techniques such as inlays, prefelts and silks to bring a contemporary flair to the ancient art form.
Her techniques involve laying out individual wisps, wetting them, and rolling it in bubble wrap. The agitation encourages the wool fibers to entangle and become felt. The result is a luxurious, soft and durable felt, which she then uses to create wall art.
The artist often includes abstract, geometric shapes and as they allow viewers to interpret the pieces based on their own emotions and experiences. The pounding of the ocean against rocks that she witnessed in New Zealand made an impact on Angelo, and she aims to put that power into her art through an explosion of colors and shapes. Ultimately, her goal is to create an emotional resonance between the viewer and the art.
